Turn old into gold

October 09, 2014

I love op-shopping & recycle centres.  I love buying second hand. Some things I leave just as they are, others I up-cycle creatively. I have a unique home full of history & character. The benefits are numerous; it helps the environment, older pieces are usually built well and not to mention second hand is usually way cheaper than buying new.  To get the best bargain you have to see past the dirt & state of disrepair and see the potential.  I am not a skilled handy person but usually a scrub down, sand, coat of paint and drop of glue is all that is required to turn old into gold. A really useful trick with stubborn grime is to use bi-carb soda. Just add a drop of water to a few tablespoons and rub on with a cloth. The fine abrasive nature of the bi-carb lifts years of dirt like no other cleaner. Bi-carb is also cheap & easy on the environment. Think twice before throwing out or buying new as there are so many creative options out there.
